Alexander Muir, Ph.D.

2023 V Scholar grantee Dr. Alex Muir is an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago. Dr. Muir studies how tumors use nutrients to grow and resist drug treatments. Dr. Muir’s research team has developed new technologies to watch how metabolism works inside of tumors. Using these tools, his team has found that many solid tumors produce and accumulate certain nutrients called amino acids which can help tumors become resistant to drugs, like chemotherapies. This work has provided a new understanding of why some patient’s tumors are drug resistant. With support from the V Foundation, Dr. Muir and his team are currently designing new approaches to lower levels of amino acids in tumors and in turn improve patient responses to therapy.
